Mass times velocity. You've probably experienced the physical force of momentum with riding in a car running down a hill. But today we consider a different kind of momentum: the momentum of thought
Mendhi Audlin 0:33
P = M x V. In Physics, it is the formula used to calculate Momentum. But what does that have to do with our mindset and our creative power?
Mendhi Audlin 0:44
Well, let me tell you a little story. A couple of weeks ago, I had to take my dog to the vet, he's been having some issues with his ankle. And yes, dogs do have ankles. We were referred to a specialist that our vet thought could help. The problem was the specialist was in Vermont, which is a several hours drive away. And it took us weeks to set up this appointment.
Mendhi Audlin 1:08
So the day finally came and tried to get everything on my schedule, it was a tight day. So I kind of woke up that morning, stressed out just trying to get everything into this day.
Mendhi Audlin 1:19
Now, the other challenge was, I had never been to Vermont, so I wasn't quite sure how long it would take to get there. And I had lots of responsibilities that I had to wedge into my day. Well, before I hit the road, I did one last check on my computer to see what the timing was going to be. And I realized that the timing that I had factored in, would have taken me on a ferry in Vermont, to get to Burlington from New York. Well, I didn't know how often this ferry ran, or if it would put me way, way behind.
Mendhi Audlin 1:54
So at the last minute, I decided, Okay, I gotta go to plan B, I got to take the long route, or I don't have to take the ferry, which meant I had to shuffle some things on my calendar, no big deal. I thought, I've got this, I can do it. But still a little stressed out from the get go. Well, I'm getting everything together, running a little bit behind feeling that stress, start to multiply. And finally, I hit the road about 10 minutes late, not too bad, I figure I can make it up in the car. As soon as I hit the road, all the things that I had put into place to cover my appointments started falling through. And my brain is just kind of saying, I don't know what to do. Like, here I am. I've got all these things that are urgent that are happening right now. And I don't know how to fix what needs to get fixed in this moment. Which is a horrible feeling.
Mendhi Audlin 2:44
And so that was like creating momentum through the whole day. Jenna and I as we were talking about it, Jenna is so sweet. She knows about energy and shifting. So as soon as we got on the road, she's like, okay, Mom, you got this cool interview today, tell him about this interview. And so I'm like, you know, I don't want to talk about the interview, because I'm still in the energetic funk, of being late and things not lining up the way they're supposed to, like things that are supposed to happen did happen energetically. I don't want to take this energy, and focus on that thing that I'm most excited about today. So it was really cool one that she was so intentionally trying to get my brain on a different topic. But it was also really cool to think about as it here's what I need in order to slow the momentum. Because when there's that much momentum going in that direction that you know, you don't want to go. And yet it wasn't as it's not resolved in my mind, yet. It's not resolved, how I'm going to get there on time, and how we're going to do all the things we need to do. And so until it's resolved, in my mind, I'm having a hard time being distracted by a different idea, you know, or even talking about something different. Because the momentum is still there. And the the unsolved issue is still there. So we talked about, I said, Here's what I like to do. And I think this could be a good topic for us for today is how do you when you have momentum going in the direction that you don't want? What is your preferred process for slowing that momentum? Because you can't like be going like zoom and then suddenly be going Jim because then it's like, even more implosion. So rather than that, okay, I'm going like heavy duty, the wrong direction, and I know it.
Mendhi Audlin 4:31
Everything. We're talking about law of attraction, like every I got behind every slow car, I got behind the boats, I got behind the cyclists. I got behind the log trucks. And we were talking we were even I was talking to Jenna about this. And we passed a street as we were talking about it, and the street name was Polarity Drive.
Mendhi Audlin 4:51
I just started laughing and just like why are you laughing? I'm like, because this is polarity. This is what that is. This is when you're clear on what you don't want but You haven't made the energetic shift yet into alignment with what you do want. I knew what I wanted, but I wasn't energetically aligned with what I wanted, I was energetically still aligned with what I didn't want.
Mendhi Audlin 5:10
So for me, I like you know, I need to breathe, I need to let my mind simmer down. I need quiet, she wanted to talk. And I'm like, I would do best to either not talk at all, or listen to some music. That's happy music. Because I need to let my mind take a breath a break, because my mind is fueling this, my mind is fueling all this.
Mendhi Audlin 5:34
And so Jenna said, Well, I'm just the opposite. So this was kinda interesting. Just like when I'm going down there, I want to not be in the silence, because in the silence, I brewed in the silence, it just makes it worse.
Mendhi Audlin 5:46
I would just love to hear like for you, do you have the awareness of how do you slow momentum in the direction you don't want to go? And when do you know that you're ready to flip into something else? So that brings us back to physics, P equals m times v, momentum equals mass times velocity.
Mendhi Audlin 6:08
And when it comes to mindset, I think of momentum as the product of two things. The intensity of the emotional response being the equivalent of mass, you know, you could have one thing happen in your life. And it's so traumatic that that one thing, you carry it with you forever, because it was has such an emotional impact. That's mass. The second piece is the frequency, the velocity of thought. And I think of this as how often am I activating that thought, how often am I thinking that thing? How often am I remembering that, that stress, how often am I looking at my phone and thinking I'm going to be late going to be late going to be late going to be late.
Mendhi Audlin 6:51
Now in the grand scheme of things, my day at the vet was not that big of a deal. Ultimately, I called and said, Hey, I'm running late. And they were like, okay, that's fine. But I had set this emotional pattern into motion. And it took me a while to come out of it. So today, I'd like to share with you some ideas, some tools for creating your own turnaround experience.
Mendhi Audlin 7:14
If you find yourself building momentum in a direction that you do not want to go, you're finding that the worse it gets, the worse it gets. These are some ideas, these are some tools to help you turn that around. So I'm going to share what I did. But I also want to share with you some ideas from our What If UP community.
Mendhi Audlin 7:32
Before we do that, I invite you to take a moment to think about the relationship between your thoughts and your reality. What kind of momentum are you seeing? Are you riding a high, the Red Sea is splitting for you, the green lights everywhere you go?like it's Go, go, go, everything's flowing, everything's easy, everything's fun.
Mendhi Audlin 7:52
Or maybe you're caught in that Riptide of focusing on what you don't want experiencing stress, experiencing the overwhelm those moments where what you don't want is just boom, right in front of you demanding your focus, impacting your emotional state and spiraling you down into that slippery slope of fear and stress and overwhelm.
Mendhi Audlin 8:13
If you're experiencing positive momentum, then just keep on rockin and know that we are here we are cheering for you all the way celebrating those wins.
Mendhi Audlin 8:21
But if you feel like you need a turnaround, if you feel like maybe you've got pointed in the wrong direction, and you could use a little help easing the journey just a little bit. Then here are a few ideas from our community.
Mendhi Audlin 8:34
What if you find one idea that you could use as a go to anytime you feel that you're sliding down that slippery slope?
Mendhi Audlin 8:43
So the first idea comes from Adriana Medina. Adriana is a neuroscientist and a fabulous member of our What if up community. This is her turnaround strategy.
Adriana Medina 8:52
The first thing is, of course, you cannot go from horrible to joyful is not going to happen. Don't even try, you have to shoot for Okay, or neutral or bored. You know just something that is not as incredibly funky as you are right now.
Adriana Medina 9:10
There's a couple of things for me. The first thing I do is the Ho'oponopono mantra. So I say I'm sorry, please forgive me. Thank you. I love you. I tried to stay with it as much as I can. But but if I'm super funky, I won't be able to say more than three or four times but even that is enough to at least switch it a little bit.
Adriana Medina 9:31
And the second thing is distract myself with something I like I have a few audio books that are just like cheesy romance or something like that, that I love them and I just put on my headphones and listen to that even if it's for a few minutes or if I have to do it for a longer time and then start doing the dishes while listening what what helps me is getting out of my head and to some fantasy work that kills the momentum that is happening in my head because I'm now In this other story,
Mendhi Audlin 10:01
We also heard from Janet Redford. Janet is a personal development coach. She works the entrepreneurs, particularly around money and mindset. And this is what she does.
Janet Redford 10:11
I actually taught my kids to be aware of when I'm getting 10, stuff like that, when I'm getting highly stressed and everything in that when they saw that they were to say, Mom, do the Tarzan call.
Janet Redford 10:22
And so if you remember, Carol Burnett, Tarzan call, right? You just do that big Tarzan call. So one time I was driving, you might hit and I was stressed. Obviously, I didn't know I was stressed as much as they could see. And so then I heard, "Mom do the Tarzan call." So we're in the car driving and I just go, Oh, I just started well, it breaks that pressure. You're feeling where your whole body's tightening up. So it brings it all the way from your belly up through your chest loosens up your throat and you're just releasing all that frustration, right? But then you crack up.
Janet Redford 10:53
So shifts me very quickly. It went from so serious to I'm doing a Tarzan call in my car in traffic. And you know, and there's been times at the, you know, at the light, and I'm wondering, well, if they hear me, they hear me, I'm looking to laugh, and I feel better. So it's the Tarzan call.
Mendhi Audlin 11:11
And finally, we heard from Natalie Soriano. Natalie is a creativity expert, and helps you get organized, Natalie shared these tips for how she turns herself around.
Natalie Soriano 11:23
I've been playing around with this, it's not even alter ego, it's just the parts of me. So the way it was in my face this week is we're trying these new workouts, they said to go try one of each type. And then once you find your type, then you go and do as many reps as possible. So we had chosen our types. Then we got to the second one. And it wasn't exactly what they were saying. So now in the middle of my workout, I have to stop and I can see myself spinning. I'm like, Roger, this is not how it's supposed to be, I'm supposed to do it exactly like the video. And I just said, Whoa, set in her way, Sally is showing. And I click and then the universe helped me because I tried to do the next one. And my I didn't have the right running shoes, because I had left the house with the wrong one. And I just fell onto my rear end. And I that that was the universe telling me to just take it easy. And then Roger actually said his feet. So I could be because I was like leaning back in the air holding on to something and so my feet were set, and then my whole body started swinging. And I said this is really just a sign to have some fun here because so when I start naming these silly parts of me like I have indecisive Enid, she shows up a lot. I have financial friend who she's at the library, I don't rely on her too often. But then playful, Polly. So it's like all these parts have just, they need to come out. And so when I can figure out which one is kind of in charge at the moment, I think I can just tell it it, you know, ease up.
Mendhi Audlin 12:44
I love that. And what a cool way to not only have the awareness of which one of these is, is in control right now, like which one of these is running the show. But which one of these would I want to call on to be able to create a change in direction or a change in momentum? So now let's what is the compass story?
Natalie Soriano 13:02
Yes, I ordered a compass from well, I didn't know it was coming from another country. But the reason I ordered it is because on the inside is a god where North usually is and I thought that's kind of cool. God is our true north. But when they sent it to me, God is down here in the south. It's kind of weird. So I email them. And I said, I love everything you put the inscription and all that but why he's got down south. Can you help with this? And they haven't responded. And so when I was telling Mindy and Janet, we just went up because I am going to give it to somebody and I can't not comment on it. I mean, I noticed it so but I want to say something positive about it. So yeah, what if God is with us, even when we are down here in the pits?
Mendhi Audlin 13:50
Huge gratitude to everyone from our what up community who has been sharing their ideas, their tips, their tools for creating those types of turnaround moments.
Mendhi Audlin 13:58
What did I do for my turnaround? Now once I had a chance, I not only was deep breathing and letting myself have some silence, but the first chance I had which is later in the afternoon. I had a 15 minute break. I pulled the car aside. And I literally I found a shady place a beautiful place in nature and I took a little power nap before I got on the phone with my mastermind group.
Mendhi Audlin 14:24
So lots of different things know what works for you. For me, it's quiet. For me it's breathing. For me. It's meditation and time in nature and a good nap. Cover to you a bubble bath.
Mendhi Audlin 14:37
What do you do to turn yourself around? What is your favorite turnaround strategy? We'd love to hear from you.
Mendhi Audlin 14:45
The best thing I did for my turnaround was reach out to this community and ask for ideas.
Mendhi Audlin 14:51
Transformation begins with hope. The idea that something better is possible. It takes root in faith the assurance of things hoped for the belief that the things we hope for will inevitably eventually come to pass. And while hope and faith are both important, it is love that fuels the change and I am grateful for the love that flows through this what if up community it's a hard road going it alone, but luckily there is another way.
