Top 5 Ways to Create Your Own Sacred Space

I’ve got a very exciting announcement right around the corner. I can’t reveal the details yet, but I want you all to be prepared by finding a special place where you feel connected and centered. Here’s some tips for creating a “sacred space” to delight your senses!

1) SEE GOD’S PRESENCE. Of course, God is omnipresent, so there’s no place where God is not! That means, there are no limits to where your sacred space can be. God is as available to us in the wilderness as in a prison cell. What makes a space sacred is your awareness of a Divine Presence. You really can’t get this wrong. Look for the places where it is easiest for you to see beauty.

2) FEEL YOUR SPIRIT. Since we are human beings, mostly running on autopilot, I’ve found the best spaces are often take us out of our everyday routine, which in itself heightens our awareness. Most people I know find that being in nature creates a strong sense of spiritual connection. Buddha had his bodhi tree. Moses had his mountaintop. Even Jesus went away to the wilderness before beginning his ministry. Find a comfortable place in the great outdoors, and you’re all set!

3) TOUCHSTONES. Of course, for some of us, we are entrenched in the concrete jungle, or the weather is not so accommodating for Thoreau-like excursions. Luckily, it’s easy to create special indoor alternatives. Look for a place that is quiet, with limited distractions. You may want to gather some items that are special to you to form a “holy altar” for your prayers or meditation. I keep a bowl of special stones, feathers, and other trinkets that I can hold as inspiration for my quiet time with Spirit.

4) TUNE IN. The hum of cicadas or the rustle of the leaves can help us relax and connect with the highest parts of ourselves. Indoors, you can create your own ambience with music, nature sound effects, or with an instrument like a small drum or Tibetan singing bowl.

5) BREATHE. A friend of mine recently sent me some decadent soy candles that I’ve enjoyed burning during prayer times. Incense works great. So does the smell of honeysuckle or sea water if you have the luxury of heading outdoors. Our family creates a sacred moment as we gather for dinner. What if you pause for just a moment to savor the scent of your meal while giving thanks for your daily blessings?

A sacred space is personal. Allow yourself to be guided to choose your environment consciously. Find joy in the discovery. And enjoy snuggling into the already always outstretched arms of God.

  1. I love this post, especially the last line–snuggling in to the already always outstretched arms of God.

I have found that by having a sacred space where I do my morning and evening meditation, and a certain ritual (turn off the ceiling light, turn on the salt lamp, put on soft music, etc), that the moment I sit down and close my eyes I feel that Holy Presence immediately because my mind and body have come to expect it.

I’m listening to the teleseminar you recently did with Steve Birch. Really wonderful. Thank you for sharing your light.

Thank you, Sara! I saw that you had joined our online community at http://www.thewhatifupclub.com, so I’m looking forward to connecting more through that. I think the ritual aspect of it is a great point… Thank you for sharing your “sacred space” with me! Glad you enjoyed the teleseminar!
